Sharing with Mom’s on the web
Last night was skate night for my kids school, as a PTO fundraiser. It was a successful fundraiser! Many families came out and the kids had a blast! The children really enjoyed watching some of the teachers roller skating … remember when you thought your teachers didn’t have a life outside of school?? My youngest child (child #3) got a kick out of seeing her kindergarten teacher skate! (By the way, she is the most amazing teacher of all time! Child #1 had her too!!)
We went as a family and had a great time! Child #1, 2 & 3 were skating up a storm … actually child 2 was cruising all around, very well I might add. Child 3 was more like running on skates .. she had those Fisher-Price plastic starter skates. Child 1 (my 15 yr. old), was skating at first as if she never skated before! She couldn’t remember how to skate, then couldn’t remember how to stop .. other than slamming into the wall. After a while she got the hang of it .. she only fell once! All the other times she was able to quickly regain her balance! It most be those years of training as a soccer goalie, great balance & quick on her feet!! My husband did well too! He was just skating all over that rink .. he never fell once!
Now we get to me ……. After the first half hour I decided to put skates on. Actually gave in to peer pressure of the family begging me to put skates on. I go to the skate rental window, hand over my shoes … the lady must have seen the look on my face (you know the one that’s saying, “what am I thinking”), she then asks, “when was the last time you skated?” I then explained that I was here about a week ago for a party & put skates on then (for like 45 min.!), but before that I think Jr. High. She smiled at me & said just be careful. I get the skates on & the my kids are finding this amusing that Mom is going to skate. It maybe how they know about that whole physical activity thing with me (you’re wondering, what happened to me doing pilates .. that’s another post!). Anyway, I get out there .. cruising around w/the kids (actually I’m hanging with child 3, she’s going slow!) .. doing fine .. decide to go slightly faster .. doing fine .. taking corners just fine .. now I’m getting daring … skating with wind blowing in my hair … taking a corner and BAM!!! It felt like I was in slow motion! I actually had time to think of how I wanted to hit the floor and embarrass myself. I quickly decided that slamming on my butt first, have my legs fly out underneath me and then hit my back would be the best senerio. Of course, there were many, many witnesses … my husband, child 1 (who was the 1s to laugh!) and child 2 (who was the 1st to show concern) … then my husband asks, “Are you okay?” I’ve never understood why people ask that question. Seriously, you just saw my wipe out & hit the floor. Did you see me bounce right back up like the younger kids? No, I just layed there (out of pain, but mostly embarrassment!). So then this nice man, stops to make sure I’m okay (he asked me at least 2 times). I said, “you know, I just don’t remember it ever hurting that much when I was younger.” He then said (very seriously), your body changes when you mature. What did he just say?! I then said, “so you’re telling me I’m old now?” He looks at me then my husband and says, “I wasn’t going to actually say it that way, but now that you said it, you know what I’m talking about.” It’s a good thing I have a sense of humor! The good thing about all of this is, I have a lot more padding back there now, then when I did when I was younger! (still wondering why it would it then. You would think it would hurt less with more “padding” back there!)
We had a great time as a family and yes, I would go roller skating again!
We did take some video of the night with my new Flip camcorder (love that new toy!!!)! I just have to figure out how to post it here. I have to get ready for work now, so check back later tonight & hope my husband posted it!!!
By the way, I am sore today!!!
